Riverside Cemetery

Riverside Cemetery in Macon, Georgia was established in 1887 as a private cemetery located above the Ocmulgee River and has operated as a not-for-profit entity since the 1940’s. The cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the final resting place for more than 19,000 people.

Project Description

Riverside Cemetery has always had a beautiful and advanced website. The website showcases interment options while providing a visual look at the cemetery grounds. The history of Riverside is featured from its inception and featured part in history to its active functioning today.

The Historic Riverside Cemetery Conservancy offers cemetery enthusiasts a way to volunteer and give back to Riverside. The Conservancy hosts special events year round. The website features an easy to update events calendar. Patrons are also able to donate to The Conservancy’s many preservation funds.

The recent refresh was driven by the need to updated the Cemetery Sexton website Plugin. The new WordPress Plugin adheres to the most up to date coding and security standards. Cemetery Sexton is Riverside’s internally developed software database of interments. The Plugin allows the public to search the database of more than 19,000 residents and view monument and marker photos and original obituary clippings.

The cemetery map is built on top of Google’s mapping API. A custom tile layer was created to show grave lot lines. The map has been updated to the newest version of Google Maps API.
